En 1933, Adriano Olivetti, quien por entonces tenía 32 años, se hizo cargo de la gerencia general de la fábrica de máquinas de escribir que había fundado su padre en las afueras de la pintoresca ciudad italiana de Ivrea, al pie de los Alpes. En ese momento, era una empresa familiar pequeña. Sin embargo, en los siguientes 30 años, bajo la gerencia de Adriano, la compañía Olivetti se transformaría en un fenómeno global, e Ivrea sería el centro de los experimentos ambiciosos acerca de la construcción de lo que él denominaba una ciudad industrial “humana”. Su interés por la escala comunitaria, por la fusión entre naturaleza y trabajo, lo llevó a fundar el Movimiento Comunità: una forma de dar respuesta a la pregunta por el cómo vivir comunitariamente, en la Italia de la posguerra.

In 1933, Adriano Olivetti, then 32 years old, took over as general manager of the typewriter factory his father had founded on the outskirts of the picturesque Italian town of Ivrea, at the foot of the Alps. At that time, it was a small family business. However, over the next 30 years, under Adriano’s leadership, the Olivetti company would transform into a global phenomenon, and Ivrea would become the center of ambitious experiments in building what he called a “humane” industrial city. His interest in community scale, in the fusion of nature and work, led him to found the Comunità Movement: a way of answering the question of how to live communally in postwar Italy.
